INDONESIA: A girl writes in a notebook bearing the UNICEF logo in her new classroom at Kampong Baro School near Calang, capital of Aceh Jaya District on the western coast of Aceh Province. Her former school was destroyed in the tsunami. The new, permanent school, built with UNICEF assistance, is child-friendly, with access ramps for children with disabilities, rounded structural pillars for safety, low door handles and bathrooms with water basins that young children can reach. [#19 IN SEQUENCE OF THIRTY-TWO] In 2006, Indonesia has made significant progress in reconstruction and recovery efforts following the devastating 26 December 2004 tsunami that struck the coast of the northern province of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (commonly called Aceh) on Sumatra Island. The disaster killed an estimated 102,897 Aceh residents and left more than 530,000 homeless. One-third of those affected were children. New schools and child centres and the restoration of social services have enabled some families to return to their original communities. Over 130 semi-permanent schools, serving nearly 17,000 children, have been built. Eight permanent schools have been built with UNICEF assistance, and 60 more are under construction. UNICEF also supports ongoing child protection initiatives. Thirteen districts now have procedures in place for managing child rights violations, and district court officials have been trained in juvenile justice issues. UNICEF helped establish child-friendly desks in 12 Aceh police stations to ensure the sensitive treatment of legal and criminal cases involving children. In the areas of water and sanitation, UNICEF and its partners are piping water to over 100,000 people in 33 villages, and trucking water to some 78,000 displaced people still living in temporary relocation centres. UNICEF is also supporting solid waste collection and septic tank disposal in 81 locations for over 30,000 displaced people. Emphasis is on sustainable projects with local ownership, and several post-tsunami recovery efforts have now been transferred to provincial departments and communities.
